The Rockhampton Region Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) is preparing for limited impacts as the Fitzroy River rises.

Bureau of Meteorology modelling shows the river is expected to peak below the minor flood level over the next 24 hours.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Mayor Tony Williams, said given the river is expected to remain below the minor flood level, it should not impact residential properties.

As a precaution, Council closed the riverside car parks along Quay Street over the weekend due to rising river levels.

While these closures are in place, timed parking restrictions in surrounding streets will be relaxed to support local access.

Council teams also prepared the riverbank areas by ensuring infrastructure is secure and turning off the water play area.

The LDMG moved to Lean Forward stage on Friday, enabling Council and partner agencies to prepare for any impacts and monitor conditions closely.

LDMG Chair and Mayor Tony Williams said:

"We are keeping an eye on those river levels as water from the upper catchment areas moves downstream. We don't expect any homes to be affected, but we will continue watching those low-lying areas.

"Our teams are preparing - removing items from areas along the riverbank, and adjusting signage in riverside car parks.

"We're also reminding the community to please stay out of the floodwaters and not to get complacent."

Council will continue to monitor river heights and weather conditions and will keep the community informed should forecasts change.
