Leading By Example With Heart And Humour

Leadership Mentoring Program embodies a collective effort to captain strong cohort.

Building leadership skills, creating connections and learning from each other, are some of the goals for people involved in the Department of Communities' Leadership Mentoring Program this year.

The program, which runs from 7 April to 14 November, received overwhelming interest from people who wanted to be mentors, mentees or embrace both roles.

The diligent Strategic Workforce Capability team worked from an extensive list of names and helped form 165 mentoring partnerships.

"We recognise that everyone is a leader and deserves the opportunity to grow and develop," A/Principal Consultant Jade Beisley said.

HR Director Jaz Draman facilitated the first session on 30 May on the topic 'Lead Collectively'. He used the Public Sector Reform experience as an example of how core leadership skills could be employed in an environment of uncertainty and change.

"Good leaders are good change managers, who guide people through that time of uncertainty and create conditions for success," he said.

Business Support Coordinator Whitney Nicholls shared her thoughts of her first meeting with her mentor Regional Manager Pilbara (Housing) Anne-Marie McLaughlin:

"I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Anne-Marie for the first time, where we mainly shared about who we were, our work-life journey on how we got to our current roles in Communities.

"I really identified with a lot of the things she said, and it seemed we shared similar values.

"It was reassuring to speak with someone who not only understood my professional aspirations but who could also appreciate the nuances of my personal life.

"She spoke candidly about her own experiences, offering some insights into navigating those complexities.

"I look forward to learning from her wide breadth of experience and growing as a professional and a people leader."
