We are about to start a tree replacement and planting project on Pride Street in Torquay, increasing tree numbers and improving the long-term health of the streetscape.
The project, part of our Branching Out public tree planting program, will see all existing median strip trees between Bell Street and Anderson Street replaced, along with additional planting on both the median and nature strips.
A total of 35 trees will be removed due to poor condition, with many already declining or nearing the end of their lifespan and providing minimal ecological value.
They will be replaced with 52 new trees, delivering a gain of 17 trees along the street.
Tree removal is scheduled to begin on 29 July, with planting to follow shortly after.
Councillor Phoebe Crockett said the project would create a greener, more appealing street environment.
"We're creating a healthier canopy along Pride Street that will bring all of the benefits that street trees generate," Cr Crockett said.
"This was chosen as a priority location for planting as a key connection in Torquay for people walking, riding or driving between Bell Street and the town centre."
The new trees will be selected for their suitability to coastal conditions, including salt exposure, helping ensure they establish successfully and thrive.
We will select a species that will reach a similar height to the existing trees, meaning views are maintained, while improved spacing will support safer sightlines for drivers.
Parking along the median strip will continue to be permitted between trees to support peak summer demand, with the number of informal parking spaces expected to remain similar.
As part of the project, the planting contractor will provide two years of watering and maintenance to help the trees establish.
The Pride Street upgrade forms part of our broader Branching Out initiative, a multi‑year program aimed at increasing tree canopy across the shire.
Street trees provide a range of benefits, including:
- Cooling streets and reducing the urban heat island effect
- Providing shade and improving comfort, encouraging active transport such as walking and cycling
- Supporting biodiversity
- Improving local character
Pride Street property owners between Bell Street and Anderson Street have been informed of the upcoming works via letter.
There will be minor traffic disruptions while the tree removal is carried out, with traffic control in place and access to driveways maintained at all times.
Further planting in surrounding streets in the Old Torquay area is also planned during the coming months.
A multi-year Branching Out implementation plan, which will help guide the choice of future planting locations, is soon to be finalised.
