Ballina Shire Council is constructing a new shared path between Park Lane and Cooper Close, Lennox Head.
The shared path will improve connectivity between the town centre and residential areas such as Sanctuary Village and Fig Tree Hill Drive, while also improving cyclist and pedestrian safety.
The project will include:
- Installation of a 3m-wide shared path for approximately 2.1km at locations along Byron Street, Byron Bay Road and Cooper Close.
- Installation of pedestrian fencing for approximately 200m along Byron Street.
- Installation of a pedestrian refuge on Fern Street.
- Drainage upgrades.
- Kerb and gutter adjustment to the bus bay on Byron Street.
This project will be completed in three stages:
Stage 1: Cooper Close (Late September – Early December 2025)
Stage 2: Byron Bay Road (Mid-November 2025 - Late January 2026)
Stage 3: Byron Street (Early December 2025 - Late March 2026)
These timeframes may be subject to change. Updates will be provided to the community via Council's website.
What to expect during construction
- Traffic control will be required, at times, during the path upgrade and drainage improvement works. Motorists should expect short delays on Byron Street.
- The upgrades along Byron Bay Road and Cooper Close will have minimal impact on path users and it is expected that the existing path will remain open for the duration of the project.
These works are identified in Council's Bike Plan (2017), Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (2018) and Council's Delivery Program 2025-2029.
The shared path alignment was chosen following extensive community consultation in 2023, where four route options were proposed as part of the consultation process. The current design was found to be most favourable in terms of road safety, environment, ecology and cultural heritage, town planning approvals and timing, and project cost.
This $3.55 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the NSW Government under the Road Safety Program.
