Leyonhjelm: forever a friend of Jewish community

David Leyonhjelm will again reiterate his support for the Jewish community, including relocating the capital to Jerusalem, in an address to the New South Wales Jewish community tonight.

"The Liberal Democrats have long supported the rights of the Jewish people to live in peace in their homeland of Israel," he said. "We also recognise that Israel is a sovereign country in its own right, and reject any insinuation otherwise.

"During my time in the Senate, I supported moving the Australian Embassy to Jerusalem and for it to be recognised as the capital. I also spoke out against anti-Semitism.

"In Senate Estimates, I exposed the very real possibility that Australian taxpayers could be funding terrorism, with evidence emerging that foreign aid was being used to reward and incite terrorism in the Middle East. This was an important step in achieving the subsequent change in government policy to cut $10 million of direct aid to the Palestine Authority.

"I also uncovered that our foreign aid was being used to fund textbooks that incited violence against Israelis. My tough questioning in Estimates has directly resulted in the Department of Foreign Affairs reviewing the list of organisations currently receiving taxpayers' money, to ensure they aren't using Australian funds to promote or celebrate terrorist activities."
