LG's new fingerprint reader sits under a smartphone screen

Once you've started unlocking your phone with your fingerprint, it's hard to go back. The problem is that modern fingerprint sensors take up a lot of space - but here's one that comes built into the screen, Digital Spy said.

It's made by LG Innotek, the development side of mobile maker LG. In order to unlock your phone, you just touch your finger anywhere on the screen.

Not only does this give you a pretty big target for your finger, it also means the sensor is waterproof and protected from scratches.

It's also more accurate than modern sensors. LG claims it has a false acceptance rate of just 0.002%. Hence it's more secure than current technology.

LG could be sitting on a cash cow here. According to market research firm IHS, 499 million fingerprint sensors were sold globally in 2015, Digital Spy said.

Thanks to the rise of mobile payment systems, that number is expected to increase to 1,600 million in 2020.

There's no word on when we'll see the technology used in phones, but expect it sooner rather than later, Digital Spy said.
