Liberal Rule Leaves Tasmania Lagging for Decade

Tas Labor

Tasmania's deeply concerning NAPLAN results confirm that after 10 years in office, the Rockliff-Liberal Government is failing our students, with no plan to fix the deep-seated issues in our education system.

As a former teacher, I am deeply concerned to read today that Tasmanian NAPLAN results were the worst in 18 of 20 categories (excluding the Northern Territory), and below the national average in every category.

Across all 20 categories, one in seven Tasmanian students need additional support - which is particularly concerning given the fact our education system and hard-working teachers and support staff are already stretched to limit.

Tasmanian Labor has consistently said NAPLAN should continue to evolve to be more fit for purpose and we welcome changes to assessment and reporting to give a more accurate picture of Tasmania's education system.

Some categories are diabolical with more than half of the student cohort not meeting expectations and an average of 40.8 percent of students across all categories not meeting literacy and numeracy expectations - that's close to 40,000 Tasmanian students.

Education Minister Roger Jaensch's "nothing-to-see-here" media release today regarding NAPLAN says everything you need to know about this government's approach to education.

he Minister doesn't mention the results in his release at all, which is a head-in-the-sand response to a critical issue which will have a direct impact on young people reaching their potential and on Tasmania's economic future.
