Liberal Victoria Nixes Costly Labor Bin Mandate

An elected Liberal and Nationals Government will ease pressure on household bills by scrapping Labor's costly fourth bin mandate.

Under Labor's current policy, councils are being forced to introduce a separate purple-lidded glass bin, adding collection and infrastructure costs that will ultimately be borne by ratepayers.

An elected Liberal and Nationals Government will repeal the mandate and allow councils to use the waste and recycling system that best suits their communities.

The Liberals and Nationals will also review Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme to identify opportunities to expand the scheme, recover more recyclable material and deliver better environmental and economic outcomes.

Shadow Minister for Local Government, Bev McArthur, said Labor's fourth-bin mandate would impose another unnecessary cost on Victorian households at a time they are facing increasing cost-of-living pressures.

"This unnecessary mandate is already driving up costs and diverting scarce resources away from the local services and infrastructure communities rely on every day," Mrs McArthur said.

"I have travelled the length and breadth of Victoria, and everywhere I went the message from councils and ratepayers was the same: scrap the mandate."

Shadow Minister for the Environment, Nick McGowan, said Victorians want better recycling outcomes, not more bins and bigger bills.

"Victorians are already struggling with soaring bills, and Labor's answer is to force another costly service onto households," Mr McGowan said.

"The Liberals and Nationals will scrap the mandate and focus on practical measures that increase recycling without adding pressure to household budgets."
