Liberals can't run away on Hydro sackings and privatization

Tasmanian Labor
  • Hydro cutting five per cent of jobs
  • Considering selling Momentum Energy
  • Government must intervene to save jobs
  • Premier, Peter Gutwein, cannot continue his selective, hands off approach and must explain to Tasmanians his true agenda for Hydro Tasmania.

Shadow Minister for Energy David O'Byrne said the Premier must intervene to stop the job losses at Hydro, which are at complete odds with his promise to create jobs in renewable energy.

"The Premier and Minister for Energy Guy Barnett have promised a renewable energy jobs bonanza," Mr O'Byrne said.

"However, what we are seeing is significant number of job losses.

"Guy Barnett has gone into hiding so it is up to the Premier to intervene and save jobs in Hydro Tasmania and the other energy businesses. Will he categorically rule out more job cuts and privatisation?"

Mr O'Byrne said that it had been revealed that Hydro Tasmania is planning to sell its mainland retailer Momentum Energy.

"The selling of Momentum is straight out privatization, something that the Government has stated they will not do.

"The events of the past week have sent shockwaves through Hydro Tasmania and neither the company nor the Government has adequalty explained their decisions.

"Where will the jobs be coming from and is this the beginning of more cuts to come?

"At the last election the Liberals promised to relocate Momentum call centre jobs to Tasmania - are those jobs for Tasmanians now at risk?

"The sale of Momentum points to a concerning privatisation agenda.

"The Government cannot wash their hands of this issue.

"Peter Gutwein must intervene in Hydro Tasmania and rule out the proposed sale of Momentum to save Tasmanian jobs."

    David O'Byrne MP

    Shadow Minister for Energy
