Liberals continue to fail on skills and training

  • Hodgman Minority Government failing unemployed Tasmanians
  • TAFE is broken under the Liberals
  • Labor's free TAFE policy vital in creating secure jobs
  • The National Centre for Vocational Education Research March 2019 quarter data paints an ugly picture for the Government's TAFE agenda.

In the five years analysed by NCVER Tasmania has gone backwards in course commencements and completions under Will Hodgman's hands-off leadership.

Shadow Minister for TAFE, University and Skills Michelle O'Byrne said the Liberals were failing Tasmanian jobseekers.

"We know 2000 apprenticeships have gone under Will Hodgman and the Liberals," Ms O'Byrne said.

"In the past five years course commencements have gone backwards 11.5 percent while completions have dropped more than 27 percent.

"Will Hodgman has never believed in TAFE and he never will.

"Labor recognises that skills training is critically important to ensure Tasmanians can get secure, well paid jobs and that is why we will provide free TAFE courses across key industry sectors where there are skills shortages.

"Labor will stand up for Tasmanian jobs and it is only Labor who stands up for TAFE."
