Liberals silent on massive crime spike

Tasmanian Labor
  • Total offences increase by 6 percent
  • Hodgman Government failing to keep people safe
  • An alarming rise in serious criminal activity has exposed the Minority Hodgman Liberal Government's failed approach to law and order.

Data from the Crime Statistics Supplement 2018-19 reveals Tasmania's total offences have increased by six percent to 27,842 offences - the highest in almost a decade.

Shadow Police Minister Shane Broad said the Liberals need to explain why crime rates are rising significantly and whether police and other first responders will be affected by the Government's savage $450 million of cuts across the public sector.

"We are experiencing some of the highest crime rates in eight years and the Liberals have gone silent," Dr Broad said.

"Total crimes are up, assaults are up, burglaries are up, car theft and even murders are up.

"The Government's tough on crime spin has been completely dismantled.

"Mark Shelton must now explain how police and other first responders will be affected by the Hodgman Razor Gang's savage $450 million of cuts across the public sector.

"We are in the midst of a significant crime spike and police and other first responders must be given the tools and resources they need to perform their duties."

Shadow Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister
