Families with children aged 0-5 are invited to take part in the Western Riverina Libraries' new literacy program - 1000 Books Before School.
The 1000 Books Before School program encourages parents to spend time sharing books with their 0-5 year olds to build foundational literacy skills before they start school.
Get your child school ready! By reading with your child every day you engage with language and help them to develop their literacy skills, instill a love of reading and encourage a daily reading habit, and help them to understand themselves and others.
It's never too early to start your little one on the road to reading and getting involved is easy:
- Become a member of Western Riverina Libraries - it's free!
- Register in person at Narrandera Library or via the Western Riverina Libraries app
- Read a book
- Track your child's reading using your 1000 Books Before School Challenge account
- Collect prizes along the way!
Reading 1000 Books Before School is easily achievable: read three books a day and finish in a year; read one book a day and finish in less than three years.
Your child will receive their own Library bag once they read their first 25 books. They will then receive an iron on badge to decorate the Library bag for every 200 books read, through to the final prize when they reach 1000 books.
Community Development Manager, Sue Killham said we are excited to get this program up and running.
"Collecting prizes throughout their reading journey is a great way to keep children motivated and instill a sense of achievement," said Ms Killham.
"The 1000 Books Before School program is an effective pathway to help prepare your child for school and life-long learning."
Every book your child reads or listens to counts. Whether they are books borrowed from the Library or books you have at home, eBooks and eAudiobooks, books read at Storytime or day care, or their favourite books over and over.
The program finishes once your child has read 1000 books or when they turn six.
To support the launch of this exciting new program, the Library will also be showcasing lots of new picture books.
