Construction continues to progress on schedule for light rail services from the city to Commonwealth Park expected to begin operating in early 2028.
Recent work on extending light rail includes the installation of rail across the intersection of London Circuit and Commonwealth Avenue, and the installation of the final canopy at the Commonwealth Park and City South stops.
New accessible pedestrian verges on London Circuit in front of the Sydney and Melbourne buildings are now open for use.
These new verges are wider, safer, and fully accessible, designed to support all users, including people with mobility aids and prams.
The reopening of the verges will make it easier to move through the city and provide more access to business in the area. Businesses will also be able to take advantage of the upgrades by using the newly created spaces for outdoor dining.
Light Rail Stage 2A will see significant improvements to the public realm delivered along its route, including new footpaths, bike lanes, trees and landscaping, all contributing to a renewed and better-connected city centre.
Works will ramp up on London Circuit East from mid-July to enable the partial reopening of the road to vehicles later this year.
Track slab and rail installation works will also be underway along Edinburgh Avenue from mid-July to August.
London Circuit East works
Temporary lane closures will be in place on London Circuit between Baileys Arcade and Ainslie Place from 13 July for up to three months.
Crews will be installing new kerbs and footpaths at London Circuit East and carrying out stormwater upgrades to increase the drainage system capacity and futureproof against flooding.
The works will be carried out in stages to reduce the impact to the community.
One lane of traffic in each direction will remain open for the duration of work. There will be no changes to bus services and buses will continue to use City Interchange.
Edinburgh Avenue works
A one-way traffic arrangement will be in place on Edinburgh Avenue between Knowles Place and Marcus Clarke Street from 5 am Monday 13 July until 5 am Monday 10 August.
Travel along this section of Edinburgh Avenue will be westbound only during this period. Detours will be in place.
To safely set up these works, the intersection of Edinburgh Avenue and London Circuit between The Mews and Knowles Place will be closed overnight on select Sunday nights in July and August. The intersection will be closed from 8pm to 5am overnight on Sunday 12 July, Sunday 26 July, and Sunday 9 August.
Intermittent road and lane closures will also be in place across Northbourne Avenue, Parkes Way and Commonwealth Avenue during July and August to support essential works.
Light Rail Stage 2A is jointly funded by the ACT and Australian Governments.
Plan ahead
These temporary changes will impact how people travel to and around the city. Road users are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, follow all detours and traffic control, and check live travel conditions before travelling.
