Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun Welcomes M5 Upgrade

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun has welcomed today's joint announcement by the NSW and Federal Governments to fund a much-needed upgrade to the M5 Motorway, calling it a vital step forward for Western Sydney.

"This is fantastic news for Liverpool and our growing region," Mayor Mannoun said.

"The M5 is a critical transport link for families, businesses and freight operators, and this upgrade will significantly improve safety, reduce congestion, and cut travel times for thousands of commuters every day."

The joint investment will enable priority works along key sections of the M5 corridor, which connects Liverpool to the Sydney CBD, the airport, Port Botany and the wider motorway network.

"With the rapid growth of our population, the construction of Western Sydney International Airport, and the development of the nearby Bradfield City Centre, this funding couldn't come at a better time," Mayor Mannoun said.

"It shows a clear commitment from both levels of government to support the infrastructure we need to thrive.

Mayor Mannoun thanked the NSW and Federal Governments for listening to the community and backing a project that will deliver lasting benefits to residents across Southwest Sydney.

"There are many more pinch points like this in the Liverpool area that need fixing as the local infrastructure groans under the weight of fast development.

"I sympathise with all the motorists who find themselves stuck fast in slow moving traffic on roads that can't cope with the demand.

"I welcome this increased commitment to improving the infrastructure connecting Southwestern Sydney with the Western Sydney International Airport.

"We look forward to seeing these other works begin as soon as possible. Liverpool is ready for what's next, and upgrades like this are a big part of that journey."

Background

The project includes a new three lane toll-free bridge over the Georges River and train lines at Liverpool, improving the connections between the M5 Motorway, Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway.

The upgrade includes the removal of the weave on the M5 Motorway between Moorebank Avenue and the Hume Highway to improve safety and traffic flow for road users entering and exiting the M5 Motorway.

The project will also include a new underpass at Moorebank Avenue, connecting the M5 Motorway westbound to the Hume Highway, and upgrade the intersection between the M5 Motorway and Moorebank Avenue.

The existing bridge over the Georges River, which connects the M5 Motorway to the Hume Highway and Moorebank Avenue, carries more than 2,500 trucks a day from the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Precinct onto the Sydney motorway network.

In the afternoon peak, traffic banks up as cars and trucks entering the motorway westbound at Moorebank Avenue attempt to merge with traffic already on the motorway that is looking to exit at the Hume Highway.

Truck numbers on the interchange are also expected to increase as new sections of the expansive Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Precinct come online.
