Lloyd Axworthy named Canadian head of Canada's election observation mission to Ukraine

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

"Election observation is one of most transparent and accountable ways to support democracy. Today, the government is announcing that the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy will serve as the Head of Canada's election observation mission to Ukraine.

"An esteemed academic, eminent statesman and former Canadian minister of foreign affairs, Mr. Axworthy has devoted his career to the cause of promoting and protecting human rights and democracy around the world. In 2006, he served as the head of the OAS elections observation mission to Peru. His nomination is a further reflection of Canada's deep and abiding commitment to strengthening democracy in Ukraine.

"Mr. Axworthy will head the Canadian delegation of short and long-term elections observers deployed to Ukraine. Together, they will observe all aspects of the presidential and legislative elections, including monitoring the participation of women, internally displaced persons and minorities in the electoral process.

"Canada is also providing funds for initiatives that counter the negative impact of disinformation in the Ukrainian elections, to support electoral reform in Ukraine and to improve women's participation in elections.

"Canada will continue to stand up for the people of Ukraine, its sovereignty and territorial integrity."
