Loaded homemade firearm seized, couple charged at Nowra

A man and a woman will face court today charged with firearm offences after police allegedly found a loaded homemade handgun during a vehicle search at Nowra yesterday.

About 8.20pm (Friday 8 January 2021), officers from South Coast Police District conducted a vehicle stop on a maroon-coloured Ford Falcon sedan on Jervis Street, Nowra.

Police spoke with the driver, a 30-year-old man, before conducting search of the vehicle.

As officers searched the vehicle, a 46-year-old woman approached police and was also searched.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police found a homemade firearm. An examination of the firearm revealed it was loaded with a .22 calibre round.

As officers attempted to arrest the man, the man allegedly resisted.

The man and woman were arrested before being taken to Nowra Police Station, where they were both charged.

The woman was charged with possess loaded firearm in a public place, and possess unregistered firearm in a public place.

The man was charged with possess loaded firearm in a public place, possess unregistered firearm in a public place, and resist officer in the execution of duty.

They were refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court today (Saturday 9 January 2021).

Inquiries are continuing.
