Kiama Council congratulates all the recipients of our Local Government Week Awards 2025.
Mayor Cameron McDonald last night presented awards to a range of people from the Kiama Municipality for their contribution to their community.
"Local Government Week is our annual opportunity to celebrate the major role councils play in our everyday lives," Cr McDonald said.
"It's also a chance to celebrate the communities that councils serve."
"My congratulations to all our nominees and recipients and thank you for everything you do for the Municipality of Kiama."
Citizen of the Year – Sabrina Kelly
Sabrina Kelly is a passionate educator, community leader, and tireless advocate for inclusion in Kiama. As founder of the award-winning Kiama Family Before and After School Care, she creates a nurturing environment that celebrates children of all abilities, especially those with additional needs.
Senior Citizen of the Year – John Dawson
John Dawson is a highly dedicated and accomplished community sports volunteer and educator with more than three decades of service. He has held numerous leadership and administrative roles, including Secretary of the Kiama District Sports Association, where he managed governance, reporting, and community liaison.
Young Citizen of the Year – Molly Allan
Molly Allan is an exceptional young athlete, coach, and role model who exemplifies leadership, resilience, and community spirit. At just 15, she earned her Development Coaching accreditation and now mentors junior netballers as Assistant Coach for the Kiama 11s Development Team and coach of a Junior A team.
Community Group Award - The Social Club for Neurodivergent Teens
The Social Club for Neurodivergent Teens Kiama is a volunteer-led initiative founded by Sabrina Kelly and Shayd Flegg, providing a safe, inclusive space for teens with Autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, and social or emotional challenges. Meeting weekly at Kiama Community Garden, the club offers genuine connection, friendship, and belonging — free from judgement or pressure to conform. It has become a lifeline for many teens who previously felt isolated or excluded.
Community Inclusion Group Award - Active Ageing NSW Inc
Active Ageing NSW Inc is dedicated to helping seniors "live young longer" through 4 innovative community programs focused on physical, cognitive, and social wellbeing. The organisation operates two dementia-focused programs including the Dementia Inclusive Dance Sessions and the Alchemy Choir which bring joy, connection, and creative expression to over 50 participants each month.
Sports Achievement Award – Archie Turano-Lyall
Archie Turano-Lyall is an exceptional young athlete whose talent and sportsmanship shine across both netball and athletics. A dedicated member of Kiama Central Netball Club, Archie has represented Kiama in the 11 Years Development Squad and was selected for the 12 Years State Netball Team in 2025.
Robert East Award (Kiama Council volunteer) – Guy Stearn
Guy Stearn has consistently demonstrated strong dedication and commitment to the Kiama Show, playing a significant role in supporting its growth and long-term sustainability. His efforts have positively impacted the entire township of Kiama, providing valuable support not only to the event itself but also to individuals who seek involvement with a community group.
Megan Dalley Award (Kiama Council cadet/apprentice) – Phillip Pecoski
Phillip Pecoski, Finance Cadet at Kiama Council, is a highly dedicated and capable team member who consistently demonstrates leadership, discipline, and exceptional customer service throughout his role. Phillip excels in simplifying complex financial and accounting concepts, communicating them clearly to non-specialist staff in accessible language, ensuring full understanding.
