Local Government Week (3 to 9 August) is an annual chance for local Councils to showcase the work they do and the services they provide for the communities they serve.
Kiama Municipal Council is committed to providing services and infrastructure to create the best outcomes for our local government area.
Mayor Cameron McDonald said local Councils are the level of government with the closest connection to communities.
"Councils are best placed to offer support to local business and neighbourhoods, which are always at the front of mind when we make decisions for Kiama," Mayor McDonald said.
"Our Councillors and Council staff are dedicated to making sure that we are doing the right thing for Kiama and the neighbouring villages for today and well into the future."
Kiama Council is not just responsible for local roads, rates and rubbish, we also provide the visitor centre, leisure centre, five public pools, holiday parks, two libraries, four cemeteries, 137 parks, reserves and sports fields, 32 toilet blocks, 32 playgrounds, 35 bus shelters, 64 car parks and six boat ramps and the list goes on.
Council is proud of the range and diversity of services that are offered to the community, from hosting major events to food safety checks, assessing building and development applications, and promoting our tourism industry.
Kiama won a third straight NSW Top Tourism Award earlier this year and will be inducted into the NSW Tourism Hall of Fame in 2027.
CEO Jane Frawley said Council had made significant improvements in meeting the Performance Improvement Order and was on track to meet its requirements by the end of the 2027-28 financial year.
"Council is the biggest employer in our municipality and our team is out and about every day of the week, working hard for local residents," Ms Frawley said.
"Kiama Council has navigated its way through very difficult financial circumstances and although we're not out of the woods yet, we continue to strive towards resolving our financial sustainability and to continue advocating for the best interests of everyone who calls this part of the world their home."
The Kiama Council planning and development team has been named a finalist in the Local Government Week NSW Awards in the Division A (population less than 30,000 people) category for its implementation of the Kiama Local Strategic Planning Document. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony in Sydney on Thursday night.
Kiama will host its Local Government Week Awards ceremony at The Pavilion on Tuesday night with trophies to be handed out for Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Arts Honour Roll, the Robert East Award, Community Group Award, the Megan Dalley Award and Sports Achievement.
