Local Government Week: More Than Meets Eye

Georges River Council

Georges River Council is celebrating Local Government Week by shining a spotlight on the services and staff that support the community every day.

Local councils are the level of government closest to the community. They play an important role in delivering the day-to-day services residents rely on. Council offers many services and facilities which help make Georges River a great place to live.

Council's Early Learning Services provide safe, inclusive and engaging environments. They support children's learning, development and wellbeing during their formative years. Their efforts have contributed to three Council Early Learning Services achieving an Exceeding rating under the National Quality Standard.

Georges River Libraries boosts learning, connection, and creativity through its services. They offer many programs and resources, with residents able to develop new skills and explore new interests. Committed library staff help foster a culture of learning and inclusion.

Providing responsive support is at the heart of Council's customer service experience. The Customer Experience team helps residents with enquiries and navigating Council services. They make sure community members feel heard and that their needs are met.

Council's Tree Management Team works year-round to care for thousands of trees in the area. The team helps create greener neighbourhoods through maintenance and tree planting. This boosts canopy cover, enhances the environment, and makes public spaces more enjoyable.

Council's Events Team plays a key role in delivering a diverse program of events throughout the year. They create opportunities for connection, cultural celebration and community participation. Over the past year, events included:

  • Lunar New Year Festival.

  • Magic of Christmas.

  • Australia Day Program.

  • Georges River Youth Festival.

  • Seniors Festival.

  • Memory walk and jog.

  • Eurovision Live Broadcast Party.

  • Uncontained Arts Festival.

  • Citizenship Ceremonies.

These services show how the Council brings value and support to the community.

Georges River Council's General Manager David Tuxford said, "Most people know Council for a couple of specific services, but so much more happens here. Local government touches almost every aspect of daily life."

"Local Government Week is a chance to acknowledge the people behind the services Council delivers. The efforts of staff help keep our services running and make a real difference to the community.

"The work of local government is often seen in small but important ways. Through a wide range of services, infrastructure, planning and community initiatives, Council helps create spaces that are safe, welcoming and responsive to the needs of the Georges River community."
