For 23 years Beryl Wallace has been making sure Benalla youngsters can safely cross Goomalibee Street to get to and from school.

Along the journey Mrs Wallace has befriended countless teachers and families and is held in such high regard she has not once, but twice, been nominated for the Victorian School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Award.

Mrs Wallace said that after being nominated for the same award in 2012, she realised it wasn't so much about winning, it was just nice to be recognised. After being nominated for a second time she is equally chuffed to know not only her, but all School Crossing Supervisors are appreciated by the community.

"While I don't know who nominated me, it is still a really good feeling to be nominated," Mrs Wallace said.

"Over the years I've developed a friendship with the teachers at St Joeys and I've got a suspicion the nomination might have come from one of them."

While the current nomination came in 2020, the awards event has been postponed because of the pandemic and will finally get underway in Melbourne on 28 October.

Of her longevity in the job, Mrs Wallace said it was the people she has met along the way that keeps her going.

"There must be something in it otherwise I wouldn't still be doing it 23 years later," she said.

The Victorian School Crossings Supervisor of the Year Award acknowledges the contribution and dedication School Crossings Supervisors provide by providing a safe journey to and from school for all schools throughout Victoria.
