Join Griffith City Council in celebrating Local Government Week 2026, and discover the many ways Council works for our community every day.
Held from Monday 3 August to Sunday 9 August 2026, Local Government Week is designed to showcase the work councils do in their communities, including the wide variety of services they provide.
This year, Council is using the week to say thank you to the selfless volunteers who support Council and to highlight some of the services and facilities the community enjoys.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, said the week was always a good opportunity to let the community know more about what Council does.
"This week is a good opportunity to move the conversation beyond roads, rates and rubbish, to the important and far-reaching role councils play in the community," Councillor Curran said.
"I invite residents to get involved in the activities we have planned throughout the week."
Activities will begin a day early on Sunday, 2 August with Griffith City Council hosting a Planet Ark National Tree Day planting. The event will take place from 8.30am on Citrus Road at the Gilmartin Drive intersection, where volunteers will help plant native trees and shrubs to enhance the local environment and create a greener future for Griffith.
On Monday, 3 August a Griffith Day Tour hosted by the Griffith Tourism Hub. Meet the Tourism Team before boarding the bus for a guided town tour, including a stop at Griffith Regional Theatre to learn about its iconic soft-sculptured curtain. The tour also includes a guided visit and light lunch at Catania Fruit Salad Farm, before finishing at Morella Grove olive orchard.
The tour runs from 9am to approximately 4pm. A $15 fee applies to help cover catering costs. Bookings are essential and close at 12pm on Friday 31 July and can be made through griffith-events.bookable.net.au
A Thank You Lunch will be held on Tuesday 4 August 2026 to recognise Council volunteers and Committee members, while also marking Griffith's 110th anniversary.
Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre (GRALC) will offer free come and try classes for locals:
- Monday, 3 August at 6am - Body Hiit 45 min
- Tuesday, 4 August at 1:05pm - Spin & Strength 45 min
- Wednesday, 5 August at 9.30am - TFC 45 minute
- Thursday, 6 August at 6.05pm - Zumba 60 min
- Friday, 7 August at 9.30am - Body Balance 60 min
A special Local Government Week Council Cafe will be held on Wednesday, 5 August 2026 at Griffith Central from 11.30am to 1pm, with Local Government themed giveaways.
