The Sydney Business Chamber says today's repealing of the Kings Cross lock out laws paves the way for the breathing of new life into this Sydney icon as something more than a late night drinking spot into an after-dark entertainment and cultural precinct that every global city needs.
"This is a great opportunity to realise the full potential of Kings Cross as a diverse, inclusive and economically valuable addition to the city as a place not simply centred around late night drinking," said Katherine O'Regan, Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber.
"Historically the Cross has a rich diversity of characters and places like the Minerva and the Hays Theatres and we now have the opportunity to transform it into a culturally significant, fun and safe precinct for people of all ages to enjoy at night."
"There are many public spaces along this strip on the edge of city that can be given a make-over and turned into a vibrant place to gather for supper or a drink after seeing a show, in an environment that celebrates diversity and inclusion for locals and tourists of all ages."
"Al-fresco dining and street performance art along with small bars and licensed cafes will create a new look and character into this once rich Sydney icon. It can be somewhere families can visit safely by combining dining and entertainment for everyone with opportunities to enjoy art, music or simply wander the laneways and use the parks.'
