Lower Clarence Scottish Association Chief and longtime stalwart of the local Scottish community, Peter Smith, has been honoured with a NSW Government Community Service Award.

Clarence Nationals MP, Richie Williamson, had the honour of opening the 121st Maclean Highland Gathering over the Easter long weekend.

He took the opportunity to surprise Peter with the prestigious award in recognition of his decades of dedication to the Lower Clarence Scottish Association (LCSA) and the broader Maclean community.

"Peter Smith is one of those rare community leaders whose dedication and passion touch every corner of our community," Mr Wiliamson said.

"He has been a pillar of the local Scottish community for more than six decades, and it was a real honour to present him with this well-deserved recognition."

Born in 1942, Peter first became involved with the Lower Clarence Scottish Association through his wife, Norma, a competitive Highland dancer and teacher.

"Peter and Norma are a true team," Mr Williamson said.

"From supporting the Highland Dancing competitions to organising the Maclean Highland Gathering, their commitment has spanned generations."

Peter joined the LCSA Committee in 1965 and has held an uninterrupted membership for 60 years, becoming Chief in 2000. Under his leadership, the Maclean Highland Gathering has become one of Australia's premier Scottish cultural events.

"Peter's leadership is remarkable," Mr Williamson said.

"His commitment extends far beyond his official duties. From leading the Street Parade and welcoming visitors to setting up grounds, liaising with local organisations, and supporting volunteers, Peter's servant leadership continues to inspire all involved.

"He leads by example, quietly ensuring everything is done to make the event a success, often performing many of the unseen tasks that keep it running smoothly.

"Alongside his committee work, he has also contributed to the Maclean & District Pipe Band and the St Vincent De Paul Society."

In addition to presenting Peter with the Community Service Award, Peter and Norma Smith were each awarded the 2026 Legends Awards from the Lower Clarence Scottish Association.

"These awards recognise a lifetime of dedication," Mr Williamson said.

"Norma's involvement in Highland Dancing for over 60 years and Peter's outstanding service to the Association are nothing short of inspirational."

"They have certainly left a lasting legacy in Maclean, fostering a sense of community, celebrating Scottish culture, and inspiring volunteers of all ages. It was a privilege to honour them in front of the community they have served so faithfully."
