Construction of the Lugarno Passive Watercraft Launching Facility is complete and is now open for the community for passive watercraft access to the Georges River.
The project was proudly funded by the NSW Government, through the Recreational Fishing Trust in association with Georges River Council.
The aim of the facility is to promote and encourage kayak fishing and other recreational and physical activities. The design of the facility has also incorporated measures for prevention of foreshore damage by wave erosion and other wear imposing elements. This was further informed through community consultation, which took place across April 2024.
The facility was designed to enhance accessibility to the foreshore and upper reaches of the Georges River, encouraging the community to use, explore, learn, and appreciate Georges River.
The durable and high-quality light watercraft ramp facility is located at the termination of Forest Road, Lugarno, adjacent to the former Ferry ramp.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg, and Peakhurst Ward Councillors Peter Mahoney and Matthew Allison inspected the facility recently to celebrate the official opening.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Council would like to thank the NSW Government and Department of Primary Industries for helping us to fund this important facility for our community.
"The Lugarno Passive Watercraft Launching Facility was identified as a high priority in the Georges River Foreshore Access and Improvement Plan 2021.
"This was built with the future in mind. It encourages low-impact recreation, protects our shoreline from wave erosion, and encourages a deeper appreciation for the Georges River. It's a small investment with a big return for our environment, our community, and our shared future."
