Lyle Shelton Pledges to Scrap NSW Gender Self-ID Laws

Family First Party

Family First NSW Upper House candidate Lyle Shelton today announced that, if elected, he will introduce legislation to abolish the state's gender self-identification laws, citing serious concerns for the safety and welfare of women and girls.

"Since July, nearly 500 men in NSW have been able to simply sign a form and legally become women," Mr Shelton said. "This defies common sense, puts women's sport in jeopardy, and opens female-only spaces to biological males. These laws must be repealed."

Figures revealed this week show 766 people have changed the sex on their birth certificates in just three months, with 496 men now legally recognised as women. Unlike in Victoria, where changes are restricted to once per year, NSW has no limit on how often a person can alter their recorded sex.

"This is not just bureaucracy gone mad — it is dangerous," Mr Shelton said. "Women fought hard for safe spaces, fair competition, and recognition of biological reality. Self-ID laws throw all of that away.

"No one should be allowed to falsify their birth certificate. It should not be easier to change your sex than it is to change your name. The LGBTIQA+ political movement has played our hapless politicians and they should be voted out for passing this nonsense law."

Mr Shelton warned that the ideology behind self-ID is also crushing free speech. "We've already seen brave advocates like Kirralie Smith dragged before tribunals and found in breach of the law for simply pointing out the obvious truth — that biological men have no place in women's sport. Australians must be free to speak common sense without fear of punishment."

Family First has consistently opposed radical gender ideology and its intrusion into law and policy. Mr Shelton said the consequences were already visible, pointing to the attempted transfer of a male killer into a women's prison and the growing risk of exploitation by predators.

"Everyday mums and dads can see this doesn't pass the pub test. We will act where the major parties have failed," Mr Shelton said.

"If elected to the NSW Parliament, I will move legislation to scrap gender self-ID and restore common sense. Family First stands for truth, fairness, and protecting women and children."
