  • Major upgrade to busy Leach Highway intersection about to commence
  • Intersection upgrade part of the Leach Highway Improvements Project
  • Leach Highway Improvements Project a key election commitment
  • Project will see intersections upgraded between Webb Street and Vahland Avenue

Upgrades to improve safety and access at several intersections along Leach Highway, between Webb Street and Vahland Avenue are set to get underway.

Stage One of the works will commence in the coming weeks, which will see the Leach Highway and Corinthian Road East intersection modified to improve safety and efficiency.

The project was a key election commitment of the State Government, with safety concerns at these intersections highlighted as a key issue from local residents.

Following extensive traffic modelling and community consultation in 2024, the project scope was refined to include improvements across three intersections:

  • Corinthian Road East - removal of right turn from Corinthian Road East, whilst maintaining all other existing movements;
  • Fifth Avenue - removal of right turn from Fifth Avenue, whilst maintaining all other existing movements; and; and
  • Beatrice Avenue - installation of traffic signals with an additional left-turning lane from Leach Highway to Beatrice Avenue, whilst maintaining all other existing movements.

Stage One is expected for completion in August, with Stage Two (Fifth Avenue and Beatrice Avenue) due to be delivered in 2026/2027, following the relocation of a number of services.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"We have been working closely with key stakeholders to explore a suite of options to deliver safer outcomes for the immediate and surrounding community, and importantly, provide improved access for those living close to this section of Leach Highway.

"The improvements have been based upon detailed traffic modelling, crash history and existing intersection spacing on the highway, to determine the best result for road users in the area.

"These upgrades are critical, but we know road works can cause disruption to the local community, so I want to thank everyone in advance for their patience."

Comments attributed to Riverton MLA Dr Jags Krishnan:

"Improving the safety of intersections along Leach Highway was a key election commitment of our government, and I am thrilled to see the works now getting underway.

"The community were strong in their view that safety along Leach Highway needed to be improved, and these works will deliver exactly that."
