Major Sewer Network Upgrades Hit Next Stage

Tasmanian Government

Works to future-proof Hobart's sewerage network is progressing, with the next stage of development at Selfs Point now underway.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said the Tasmanian Government is working with TasWater to deliver the major upgrades.

"The works include a new 4.3 km pipeline linking Macquarie Point and Selfs Point," Minister Vincent said.

"More than 1.5km of pipe has been laid beneath the streets of Hobart – that's more than a third of the total route.

"More than 10,000 tonnes of soil have been removed from Macquarie Point to make way for the new state-of-the-art pump station."

The new pipeline will transfer wastewater from a new pump station at Macquarie Point to the future Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant.

"Our Government is deliver for Tasmania with these upgrades by improving environmental outcomes by removing 132 tonnes of nitrogen and phosphorus from the River Derwent," Minister Vincent said.

"Once complete, Selfs Point will open up capacity for 8,000 new homes. Importantly, the plant is designed for easy expansion to cater for a further 20,000 homes within the catchment."

There will be some necessary road closures on Queens Walk and Domain Highway during the next week as this project progresses.

"I ask motorists to be patient while these important works progress," Minister Vincent said.

The Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project will provide an estimated 3,420 direct and indirect jobs and generate an estimated $1.1 billion worth of economic activity in the State.

This infrastructure will serve Hobart for the next 50 years - supporting growth, improving water quality, and enhancing resilience to wet weather events.
