Two significant sports infrastructure projects are underway in Eltham, delivering improved playing conditions and greater resilience for local sporting clubs, schools and the broader community.
Council has commenced the $1.22 million reconstruction of the Bridge Street Sports Ground and the $598,028 drainage and irrigation upgrade works at Susan Street Oval.
The projects will improve the quality, safety and reliability of two important multi-use sporting facilities, supporting participation across a range of sports and community activities while reducing disruptions caused by wet weather and ageing infrastructure.
The Bridge Street Sports Ground reconstruction will transform the existing rugby field into a higher-performing surface capable of supporting increased training and match use, while accommodating a range of community and sporting activities.
Works include field regrading, a new drainage and irrigation system, construction of a sand-profile playing surface, establishment of TifTuf couch turf, new coaches' boxes and drinking fountains. The project is expected to be completed in mid-2027.
At Susan Street Oval, a major drainage and irrigation upgrade is underway to improve the condition and performance of the playing surface. Works include a new automatic irrigation system, sub-surface drainage, sand slitting and turf replacement, with completion expected by the end of this year.
Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said the projects represent a significant investment in community sport and active recreation.
"Together, these facilities support a wide range of users, including local sporting clubs, schools and community groups.
"By improving drainage, irrigation and playing surfaces, we're creating facilities that are safer, more reliable and can be used more often throughout the year, ensuring they continue to meet the needs of our growing community," Cr Joiner said.
Wingrove Ward Councillor Cr John Dumaresq said the projects would deliver lasting benefits for local clubs and users.
"The Bridge Street Sports Ground reconstruction is a game-changer for the Eltham Rugby Union Football Club, Nillumbik's only rugby union club, providing a high-quality surface that can better withstand winter conditions and increased use," he said.
"The Susan Street Oval improvements will also make a real difference for the many sporting clubs, schools and community members who rely on these facilities throughout the year."
The Bridge Street Sports Ground reconstruction is funded through a $250,000 contribution from the Victorian Government's Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, $922,206 from Council and $50,000 from Eltham Rugby Union Football Club.
Susan Street Oval is home to cricket, football and rugby programs and is also used by local schools for interschool sport and community activities. The $485,000 project is funded through a $40,000 contribution from the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund and $445,000 from Council.
The trail surrounding both spaces will remain open throughout construction. Council is continuing to work closely with affected clubs, with alternative locations available at Eltham Lower, Eltham Central and Eltham North.
