It has been a busy lead up to the end of the year for the Snowy Monaro Cemetery Services team, with a whole host of projects and planning underway.

Cooma Cemetery is set to see a major upgrade which will see the facility remain open for internments for an additional 10 to 15 years.

Niche walls at Cooma Cemetery have been erected and finished. Niche walls serve as a prominent memorial for the cremated remains of loved ones interred at the cemetery.

Another major project is the development of an online interactive map for all of Council's cemeteries across the region.

Working with leading cemetery mapping companies, Council's Cemetery Services team will be on the ground in the new year verifying stored cemetery mapping data. This will ensure that the new digital interactive map system is 100% accurate for users when the system launches.

This new service will allow friends, relatives, genealogists, historians and any interested people to find the precise location of anyone buried at a Snowy Monaro cemetery.

Cemeteries have also suffered increased maintenance costs owing to the heavy rainfall across the region. The Cemetery Services team has taken measures to address concerns and prevent further damage including:

  • mounding soil on graves
  • tamping soil to improve compaction
  • increased frequency of inspections
  • topping off graves that have experienced soil subsidence
