Road safety is a key priority for Wyndham City and from 17 July, the speed limit along Synnot Street will be reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h.
This road safety measure follows a Notice of Motion from Councillor Mia Shaw that highlighted road safety and visibility issues along Synnot Street, especially at car park entry and exit points.
An independent road safety audit conducted in line with Australian Standards confirmed that, combined with the recent removal of 16 non-compliant parking spaces, reducing the speed limit would significantly improve sight lines at car park entry and exit points and enhance road safety for all users.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw, said the speed limit reduction was a small change that would make a big impact.
"This is a common-sense, evidence-based approach that puts community safety first and will help create a safer environment for all road users, including drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians," Cr Shaw said.
"We've listened to community concerns about visibility and safety, particularly near car park exits along Synnot Street, and acted accordingly."
"The reduction to 50 km/h will have a minimal effect on travel times, but it makes a major difference when it comes to protecting vulnerable road users, including children, older residents, and people riding bikes."
"This initiative balances the need for road safety with the community's access needs, helping to create a safer, more accessible City Centre for all."
