Man arrested after police threatened with knife in Doonside

A man has been arrested after allegedly threatening police with a knife at Doonside this morning, NSW Police say.

Just after 8.20am (Saturday 1 September 2018), police received reports a man approached a woman and threatened her with a knife at the corner of Hartnett and Tarrant Places, Doonside.

When police arrived, they could not locate the man and conducted inquiries into his whereabouts.

About 10.10am, police attended Melkarth Place, Doonside, after reports a man was causing a disturbance.

Officers from Blacktown Police Area Command attended and observed a man on the street, armed with a knife.

The man approached the police vehicle, and officers attempted to withdraw from the area.

The officers drove to the end of the cul-de-sac and the man followed.

When police tried to speak with the man, he allegedly became aggressive toward officers and advanced towards them armed with the knife.

One officer discharged a firearm which missed the man, and the other officer deployed a Taser and a 37-year-old man was arrested.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the location to treat the injured man for a knife wound to his hand.

He was taken to Blacktown Hospital where he remains under guard awaiting a psychiatric assessment.

No one was injured as a result of the incident.
