Man arrested in New York over alleged sexual assault at Carlton

A man wanted on a warrant for sexual assault has been arrested in the United States.

Officers from St George Police Area Command have been investigating the sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman, allegedly committed by a 35-year-old Nepalese National, at a unit in Carlton on the evening of Tuesday 13 June 2017.

The man left Australia in the hours following the incident.

Officers were assisted by the New York City Police Department International Liaison Unit, when investigators discovered the man was in New York.

NSW Police subsequently applied for a NSW warrant and an extradition application was submitted to the Attorney General's Department.

About 9.20am on Thursday 17 January 2019, the man was arrested by NYPD – United States Marshall Service Task Force officers in New York, by virtue of a Federal Warrant.

Extradition proceedings are expected to commence to have the man return to Australia, where he will be charged.
