Man arrested over bungled Murray Bridge car theft, SA

A man will face court on several charges following a bungled attempt at stealing a car at Murray Bridge overnight, according to SA Police.

Just after 1am on Saturday 6 October, a car owner woke to hear his 4WD being driven away from outside his home in Trevor Street. The car owner's mother and her partner gave chase in her car following the stolen 4WD and phoning police.

A police patrol headed to the area of Old Swanport Road, after the pursing witnesses lost sight of the stolen vehicle.

As the police patrol searched the surrounding streets, the stolen 4WD suddenly appeared from a nearby property, dragging some rusty fencing wire and old fence posts behind the vehicle.

The fence wire ended up stopping the 4WD as it tangled up under vehicle on Agricultural Drive Murray Bridge.

On seeing the police patrol the driver attempted to flee, but he fell face first on the ground as he launched himself from the vehicle. He did manage to run a few metres with police giving chase on foot, but he didn't get far as he ran into a fence in the dark and was quickly arrested.

The 24-year-old man from Murray Bridge was charged with illegal use, driving disqualified, driving under the influence of alcohol or drug, plus refusing a breath test.

Enquiries are continuing as a male passenger in the stolen car managed to elude the police patrol.
