Man Charged After Baby-Involved Pursuit

A man has been charged after he allegedly led police on a number of pursuits with a 7-month-old baby in the front seat between Campbelltown and Goulburn earlier this month.

About 9.30pm on Tuesday 7 August 2025, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were travelling south on the Hume Highway, Blair Athol, when they detected a sedan allegedly travelling at 168km/hr in a 110km/hr sign posted zone.

Police activated their warning lights and when the driver allegedly failed to stop a pursuit was initiated; however, it was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

A short time later police located the car at a service station at Sally's Corner.

Police activated their warning lights; however, when the alleged driver failed to stop again a pursuit was initiated on the Hume Motorway, Goulburn.

The pursuit continued until the sedan stopped at a service station on Hume Street, Goulburn.

When police approached the car, the driver allegedly locked himself inside the vehicle and refused to open the door to police causing officers to smash the driver's side window and arrest him.

Officers also found an allegedly unrestrained 7-month-old baby - known to the man - seated in the front passenger seat.

NSW ambulance attended and assessed the baby who appeared to be uninjured before he was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital for monitoring.

The child is now in his family's care.

The 35-year-old man was subjected to roadside breath test which returned a negative result; however, a roadside drug test allegedly returned a positive result.

He was taken to Goulburn Police Station where he allegedly tested positive to methylamphetamine, which was sent away for secondary testing.

The man was taken Goulburn Hospital for further monitoring.

On release, he was transported back to Goulburn Police station and charged with police pursuit-not stop-drive at speed, not comply with direction given by police officer, drive with one passenger seatbelt/restraint not properly fastened, class a motor vehicle exceed speed more than 45km/h, dishonestly obtain property by deception, drive vehicle, illicit drug present in blood, and common Assault (DV) relating to an alleged incident earlier that night.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in Goulburn Local Court today (Tuesday 26 August 2025).
