Man charged after home broken into and car stolen in Inverell

A man will face court today after allegedly breaking into a home and stealing a car while intoxicated at Inverell, NSW Police say.

About 5pm yesterday, officers were called to Evans Street following reports of an intoxicated and argumentative man.

Officers removed the man and took him to a residence in Lauder Street and left him in their care.

A short time later, the man allegedly became agitated and armed himself with a knife. He then ran to a nearby house and gained entry.

A 28-year old woman and a 12-year-old girl were inside the home at the time and fled to the backyard when they saw the man with the knife.

The girl was able to escape over a fence, but the woman was allegedly confronted by the man in the backyard.

The man allegedly went back into the home and took the keys to a car parked in the driveway.

Police arrived a short time later and attempted to arrest the man who had allegedly started the car and reversed back, nearly hitting an officer.

Officers were able to drag the man from the car after it hit a tree and became lodged on a raised garden bed.

A 23-year-old man was arrested and subjected to a roadside breath test which produced a positive reading.
