Man charged after Strathfield fires, NSW

Police have charged a man with arson offences after three fires in Strathfield and South Strathfield, NSW Police say.

The first incident occurred on the afternoon of Monday 13 November 2017 when a tree was allegedly set alight outside a house on Manning Avenue, Strathfield.

A witness observed the incident and the fire was extinguished soon after. The matter was reported to police who commenced inquiries.

In the early hours of today (Friday 22 December 2017), a tree was allegedly set alight in Ford Park, South Strathfield before being extinguished by Fire & Rescue NSW.

A short time later, a tree in Clement Street, Strathfield, was allegedly set alight which caused damage to the tree as well as to a boat parked nearby.

Residents had attempted to put out the fire with a garden hose before Fire & Rescue NSW attended and extinguished it.

About 1.30am, police arrested a 33-year-old man on the corner of James Street and Water Street, Strathfield. A bicycle was seized which police will allege had been stolen from Burwood on Tuesday 19 December 2017.

The man was taken to Auburn Police Station where he was charged with two counts of intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread, damage property by fire, larceny and an unrelated breach of an apprehended violence order.

He was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today.

Investigations by Flemington Local Area Command are continuing.
