A man has been charged after he allegedly carjacked, wounded another man and was involved in a pursuit while two children were in the car in Sydney's west.
About 3pm yesterday (Saturday 12 September 2026), officers attached to Campsie Police Area Command were called to Moreton Street, Lakemba, to conduct a welfare check on a 36-year-old man.
A short time later the man was sighted driving on Lakemba Street, Lakemba, where police attempted to stop the vehicle.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a police pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued into Belmore and Belfield before it was terminated due to the manner of the man's driving.
A short time later, the man had a collision with another vehicle at the intersection of Parramatta Road and Bombay Street, Lidcombe.
Following the crash, the man allegedly exited the vehicle with two children and unsuccessfully attempted to steal another car.
Police will allege the man and the children got into a black Kia hatchback and allegedly threatened a female driver of the vehicle with a knife before she exited the car.
The 36-year-old man allegedly cut a 25-year-old man's hand when he stopped to assist and attempted to remove the car keys.
The 36-year-old man allegedly stole the woman's vehicle and drove westbound along the M4 Motorway, Wentworthville.
The vehicle stopped on the Cumberland Highway, near Greystanes Road overpass, where the man left the car and was restrained by an off-duty police sergeant and assisted by members of the public.
A short time later, police arrived and arrested the man before he was taken to hospital under police guard, where he remains.
The children sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital as a precaution.
The man was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, robbery armed with offensive weapon and reckless wounding. He is due to appear at Local Bail Division Court 10 today (Sunday 13 September 2026).
