Man Charged After Sydney South Police Pursuit

A man will face court charged following an alleged pursuit across Sydney's south overnight.

About 11.30pm on Thursday 19 March 2026, officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command were patrolling the Sydney CBD when they attempted to stop a vehicle on Macquarie Street, Sydney.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle continued east along Shakespeare Place towards the M1 Eastern Distributor, before travelling along William Street and onto Victoria Street, eventually re-entering the M1 tunnel.

The pursuit continued towards Sydney Airport and into Brighton-Le-Sands, where the vehicle allegedly crashed into a raised median strip at the intersection of The Grand Parade and Bay Street.

The vehicle allegedly continued towards Cumberland Street, Carlton, where it came to a stop. As police approached, the vehicle allegedly reversed into a police car before accelerating away.

The pursuit continued onto King Georges Road, Hurstville, before the vehicle entered the M5 Motorway and allegedly collided with a Honda Accord travelling in the same direction.

The driver of the Honda Accord was uninjured.

The vehicle stopped a short distance later, and the driver – a 53-year-old man – was arrested after a short foot pursuit.

He was taken to Kogarah Police Station and charged with;

- assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm,

- use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc,

- police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly, and

- negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm).

He was refused bail to appear before Sutherland Local Court today (Friday 20 March 2026).
