Man Charged for Lighting Royal National Park Fires

A man has faced Court after being charged with allegedly lighting fires in the Royal National Park south of Sydney.

Just after 8.00am yesterday (Sunday 21 December 2025), police received a report a man was allegedly seen lighting a small fire on McKell Avenue, Waterfall, approximately 500 metres from the intersection of Sir Bertram Stevens Drive.

A short time later, officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command attended a carpark on Sir Bertram Stevens Drive and located a 48-year-old man near the site of another fire, which did not ignite.

The man was arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station.

The man was charged with three offences – cause or set fire to the property of another – or Crown Land (two counts) and possession of equipment for administering prohibited drugs.

The man was refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Monday 22 December 2025), where bail was formally refused, to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 13 January 2025.
