A Tasmanian man is scheduled to appear in Alice Springs Local Court today (26 August, 2026) after being charged for allegedly entering a restricted area within a Northern Territory Commonwealth establishment.
The man, 38, was arrested in November, 2024, after AFP officers on duty at the Joint Defence Facility at Pine Gap, near Alice Springs, allegedly identified him walking within the prohibited area without authorisation.
While questioning the man, it will be alleged AFP officers found him to be in possession of a camera and photographic equipment.
The man was served with a summons last month to appear in Alice Springs Local Court today (26 August, 2026), where he will face the following charges:
- One count of being in a prohibited area namely the Joint Defence Facility at Pine Gap, contrary to section 9(1) of the Defence (Special Undertakings) Act 1952 (Cth). This offence carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment; and
- One count of possessing a camera in a prohibited area namely the Joint Defence Facility at Pine Gap, contrary to section 17(1) of the Defence (Special Undertakings) Act 1952 (Cth). This offence carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment.
