A man will appear in court today charged by Child Abuse detectives over his alleged role in the death of a four-week-old baby in the state's Riverina.
In July 2023, detectives attached to State Crime Command's Child Abuse Squad established Strike Force Wighton to investigate the suspicious death of a four-week-old baby boy.
Child Abuse detectives were notified after the baby was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital on Thursday 27 July 2023, in a critical condition where he was found to be suffering a number of unexplained serious physical injuries.
The baby was transferred to Sydney Children's Hospital where he died three days later, on Monday 31 July 2023.
Following extensive investigations and with the assistance of the NSW Crime Commission who utilised their statutory powers to assist the investigation, strike force detectives arrested a 26-year-old man – known to the child – in Albury CBD at 10am today (Friday 9 May 2025).
The man was taken to Albury Police Station where he was charged with manslaughter (DV).
He was refused bail to appear before Albury Local Court today.
