Man Charged Over Attempted Sale of Stolen Goods in Wollongong

A man will face court today, charged over the alleged theft and attempted sale of stolen property in the state's Illawarra at the weekend.

Between 8pm Saturday (4 February 2023), and 1pm Sunday (5 February 2023), police will allege a car parked on Benjamin Road, Mt Kembla was broken into, with a wallet, membership cards and items – including binoculars, a range finder, a speargun, a bow and arrow and a scope – stolen.

It will be alleged the stolen items were listed for sale on a social media platform.

The owner of the items contacted officers from Wollongong Police District, who began an investigation.

Following inquiries, police attended a caravan park at Woodrow Place, Figtree, about 5pm yesterday (Monday 6 February 2023), where they arrested a 28-year-old man, allegedly in possession of the stolen items.

Police then executed a search warrant at a caravan inside the caravan park, and seized several items also alleged to have been stolen from the Mt Kembla area.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with,

  • Enter vehicle or boat without consent of owner/occupier,
  • Attempt dispose property – theft – serious indictable offence,
  • Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not motor vehicle),
  • Goods suspected stolen in/on premises (not motor vehicle), and,
  • Detention application – arrest.

The man was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Tuesday 7 February 2023).
