A man has been charged after allegedly committing numerous serious offences on the Mid North Coast, including attempting to steal a vehicle with a child on board, NSW Police say.
On Monday (9 July 2018), police allege a 19-year-old man stole a Mitsubishi Lancer from Forster.
Early yesterday (Tuesday 10 July 2018), it is alleged the man drove to a service station in South Kempsey, where he committed a fraud offence.
He then dumped the vehicle on Crescent Head Road, South Kempsey, before breaking into a nearby granny flat.
Police believe about 8am to 9am he received a lift back into Kempsey before returning to Crescent Head Road later in the day.
At that time, police spotted the man on Crescent Head Road, who then ran into bushland before trying to steal a nearby vehicle which had a small child in the back seat.
The attempt to steal the car failed and the man continued to flee, running into dense bushland.
Police established a perimeter and the man was arrested a short time later by a Dog Squad officer.
He was taken to Kempsey Police Station where he was charged with eleven offences including aggravated break and enter, carjacking (take motor vehicle with occupant on board), take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, hinder police, assault police (x2), obtain financial advantage by deception, and breach AVO (x3), and a detention application.
He was refused bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court tomorrow (Wednesday 11 July 2018).
Police are appealing for any drivers who may have given the man a lift into Kempsey to come forward.
