Man charged with 28 offences after pursuit with children in car, NSW

A man and woman have been charged with multiple offences after two police vehicles were rammed during a pursuit in the state’s north, NSW Police say.

About 10.45pm yesterday (Thursday 11 October 2018), police attempted to stop a Ford Ranger on River Street, Ballina.

The vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated, which continued through the streets of Ballina and on to the M1 motorway.

During the pursuit the man allegedly made calls to Triple Zero making threats towards police.

The pursuit was terminated about 10 minutes later due to the dangerous manner of driving.

About 12.25am (Friday 12 October 2018), the car was sighted west of Lismore, however no pursuit was initiated.

About 1.05am, the vehicle was again sighted on Summerland Way, heading towards Casino.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, however, it failed to stop and another pursuit was initiated.

About 1.10am, the vehicle stopped and reversed into a highway patrol vehicle, before accelerating and ramming another police vehicle. The police vehicle was pushed back several metres, narrowly missing an officer who was attempting to lay down road spikes.

The driver, a 25-year-old man, was then removed from the vehicle and arrested. He allegedly resisted arrest.

A 29-year-old woman who was in the passenger seat was also arrested. Police located two children in the car, aged six and eight.

The man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital where a blood and urine sample was obtained.

He was then taken to Lismore Police Station and charged with 28 offences, including:

  • Outstanding warrant (x2)
  • Receive stolen property
  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously (x3)
  • Drive manner dangerous (x3)
  • Fail to comply with request or signal to stop (x3)
  • Use carriage service to threaten to kill
  • Threaten injury to person with intent to prevent lawful detention (x2)
  • Use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention (x2)
  • Resist arrest
  • Destroy or damage property (x3)
  • Assault police officer in execution of duty (x7)

He was refused bail to appear at Lismore Local Court today (Friday 12 October 2018).

It is understood the man is also wanted for serious offences in Queensland.

The woman was taken to Lismore Police Station where she was charged with aid and abet police pursuit, receive stolen property and wilfully obstruct officer in execution of duty.

She was refused bail to appear at Lismore Local Court today (Friday 12 October 2018).

The children are in the care of government services.
