Man Found With Severe Burns in Newcastle, Police Lay Charges

A man will appear in court today charged after another man was seriously injured after allegedly being set alight at Newcastle this week.

Emergency services were called to a fast-food restaurant in King Street, just after 3.20am on Thursday (28 September 2023), when a man suffering serious burns to his body sought help.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District are investigating reports the 23-year-old man was assaulted and set on fire.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital before he was transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Detectives commenced an investigation into the targeted attack under Strike Force Droney.

As part of inquiries, a 20-year-old man was arrested after attending Raymond Terrace Police Station about 5pm yesterday (Friday 29 September 2023).

He was charged with throw/lay down explosive etc with intent to maim/do grievous bodily harm and cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent.

The Newcastle man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Saturday 30 September 2023).
