A man will reappear in court today after being charged over the alleged importation of methamphetamine, or 'ice', worth $5.6 million, from Eurasia.
On 8 September 2019, Australian Border Force (ABF) officers examined an air cargo consignment from Azerbaijan, which was declared to contain curtains.
The package was opened, revealing five curtains. An incision was made into one of the curtains revealing padded material which was covered in residue.
The residue was tested and returned presumptive positive results for methamphetamine, or 'ice'. Each curtain was found to contain about 1.5kg of the drug impregnated within the padded material.
The total amount seized was about 7.5kg, which has an estimated potential street value of more than $5.6 million.
The matter was referred to NSW Police Force, and officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command commenced an investigation.
Following inquiries, investigators arrested a 48-year-old man at Hallstrom Place in Wetherill Park on Wednesday 25 September 2019.
The Castle Hill man was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with import commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.
He appeared at Fairfield Local Court on 26 September 2019 where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court today (21 November 2019).
