Man in critical condition after incident in Deer Park

A man has been taken to hospital following an incident in Deer Park this evening (19 April).

Police officers stopped the man's vehicle on Ballarat Road about 7.15pm as part of a routine intercept.

While police were conducting a licence check, the man fled his vehicle on foot and ran across Ballarat Road where he was struck by a car.

The driver of that vehicle was not injured and stopped to assist.

The male, believed to be aged in his late 20s, has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined and a number of passengers in the injured man's car have been spoken to.

The incident is being investigated by Homicide Squad and Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives and will have oversight from Professional Standards Command as per standard protocol.
