Man seriously assaulted in Morwell

La Trobe Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance after a man was seriously assaulted in Morwell on Monday 31 December, Victoria Police say.

Police have been told a man was walking home through a park near the Waterhole Creek walking track sometime between 3pm and 4pm.

The victim was approached by an unknown man between the Airlie Bank Road footbridge and Burnside Drive, and without warning the man punched him to the face a number of times.

The offender fled the scene and is described as Caucasian in appearance, 182cm tall with a dark beard or facial hair.

He was wearing a black baseball cap, white t-shirt, black shorts and was carrying a blue umbrella.

A 46-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries.

Investigators are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone that may have been in the area at the time of the assault.
