Man Shot; Officer Assaulted - Chester Hill

An investigation is underway following a public place shooting in Sydney's south west overnight.

About 11:30pm (Wednesday 22 April 2026), emergency services were called to Campbell Hill Road, Chester Hill, after reports of shots fired.

Officers from Bankstown Police Area Command attended and a crime scene was established after several shots were reportedly fired from a black utility into another vehicle.

Both vehicles left the scene prior to the arrival of police.

Shortly after, police were notified a 26-year-old man had presented at Auburn Hospital about 11.35pm, suffering gunshot wounds.

Officers from Auburn Police Area Command attended the hospital and located a Mercedes in the car park with a number of bullet holes. A crime scene was established.

Police attempted to speak to a man in the emergency department and during the interaction, he allegedly assaulted the 58-year-old chief inspector, repeatedly punching him in the head.

The officer, with the assistance of security, arrested the 30-year-old man and he was taken to Auburn Police Station.

The 30-year-old man has since been charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause and refused bail to Burwood Local Court today (Thursday 23 April 2026).

The officer was treated for a laceration to his head.

The 26-year-old injured man has since been transferred and remains in a critical condition.

Detectives have commenced an investigation into the shooting under Strike Force Skrit.
