Man to face court over car rebirthing syndicate, NSW

A man will face court today after being extradited from Singapore and charged over his alleged role in a car rebirthing syndicate operating across Sydney’s west, NSW Police say.

In July 2014, detectives from the Financial Crimes Squad’s Motor Unit commenced an investigation into an alleged car rebirthing syndicate operating out of Concord and Alexandria.

As part of their investigations, police executed a search warrant at a business in Bowden Street, Alexandria, on Tuesday 29 July 2014.

Officers seized several items, including a Ferrari 360 coupe sports car reported stolen from Concord in 2014, Mercedes sedan car parts alleged to have been stolen from Merrylands in 2012, and a BMW M3 sedan reported stolen from a car dealership in 2001.

Following further investigations, a 45-year-old man was arrested in Singapore in late January 2018 pursuant to a request made by Australia.

Since that time, police, with the assistance of the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, have been making arrangements to seek his extradition from Singapore.

Following the approval of his extradition by Singaporean authorities, detectives travelled to Singapore last Saturday (13 October 2018) where the man’s surrender was effected.

The man travelled with detectives, arriving in Sydney today (Tuesday 16 October 2018).

The extradition was the result of close cooperation between NSW authorities, the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, the Australian Federal Police, Singapore’s Central Authority within the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Singapore Police Force, and demonstrates the strong and effective relationship between Australian and Singaporean law enforcement agencies.

The man was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with 11 counts of dishonestly possess interfered with unique identifier, 12 counts of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, two counts of knowingly possess identity plate not on correct vehicle, and knowingly facilitate organised car rebirthing.

The man was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today.
